Our Start
Scared by the Sound began 25 years ago with a front yard, a few decorations, and one man’s passion for Halloween. What started as Pat Costello’s love for turning his home into a neighborhood fright fest has grown into one of New York’s most iconic haunted attractions — a family-run event that now welcomes thousands of thrill-seekers each October.
Set at the legendary Rye Playland, Scared by the Sound quickly became a must-visit for Halloween lovers across Westchester County and beyond. The haunt has evolved into a sprawling 12,000 square foot experience, packed with detailed sets, live actors, and heart-pounding scares — with all new areas including Wolves Den, His Masters Quarters and Cell Block C-D.
Back last year after a brief hiatus, Scared by the Sound proudly returns to Rye Playland this Halloween season with an even bigger, better and scarier than ever haunted attraction. Still operated by the Costello family and backed by a talented and dedicated team of haunt professionals, we remain committed to delivering unforgettable Halloween thrills — the kind that stay with you long after you leave.
