Our Start
Scared by the Sound began 22 years ago with a front yard, a few decorations, and one man’s passion for Halloween. What started as Pat Costello’s love for turning his home into a neighborhood fright fest has grown into one of New York’s most iconic haunted attractions — a family-run event that now welcomes thousands of thrill-seekers each October.
Set at the legendary Rye Playland, Scared by the Sound quickly became a must-visit for Halloween lovers across Westchester County and beyond. With the support of After Dark Attractions and a dedicated creative team, the haunt has evolved into a sprawling 12,000 square foot experience, packed with detailed sets, live actors, and heart-pounding scares — including guest favorites like the Crypt Walk, Haunted Wine Cellar, and Tunnels of Doom.
Now, after a brief hiatus, Scared by the Sound proudly returns to Rye Playland, bigger and better than ever. Still operated by the Costello family and backed by a team of haunt professionals, we remain committed to delivering unforgettable Halloween thrills — the kind that stay with you long after you leave.
